The Ballard Locks

So far, this place is my favorite place on the trip. The Ballard Locks are the second most busy locks in the world after the Panama Canal. They were built right around the same time, both finished in the 1910s. These locks are on a canal that connects the Pacific Ocean with all of these inland lakes that surround Seattle. (See map below).

The fish ladder is an important part of the dam that is here also.

Here is the map which shows the connections.

Boats lined up in one of the locks (there are two, one for big ships and one for smaller).

There is also a garden surrounding the locks.

This Corps of Engineers guy was passionate about his job of educating us to the environment.

This is the fish ladder.

There is a viewing room to watch the salmon decide which way to swim.

That's a railroad bridge in the background. The ranger pointed out that barge/water travel is the most efficient way to move goods.

A big old boat in the lock.

More boats. If you come to Seattle, I highly recommend this place to you. It's way better than the Space Needle or the Monorail. Also, it's in this very cool neighborhood named Ballard where there are great shops and restaurants.
