The Rookery

Please read this post from the bottom up.  My computer has gone crazy today.  To Frank Lloyd Wright's credit, he didn't remove any of the original stuff, he only sheathed it in the marble.  So in the future, they could remove Wright's marble.

This staircase goes all the way to the top.

In one of the remodellings of the building, they added another roof on the top floor.  Wright's atrium roof leaked as did all of his roofs.

Also, the building has a central atrium.  The roof is on the third story.  Above the third story, there is no roof over the atrium.  So imagine when it snowed in Chicago.  I imagine the snow would melt because the atrium was heated.  In c.1905, the owners hired Frank Lloyd Wright (who had been an apprentice of Burnham's) to update the atrium.  He added all of the white marble.  He completely changed the look.

This is The Rookery.  The first skyscraper anywhere.  Here are the breakthrough reasons:  Steel frame which holds up the building rather than the exterior walls.  This enables tons of windows. The exterior walls are just a facade.  Designed by Daniel Burnham the father of the skyscraper.  Finished in 1888.  The first building to have elevators because it's 12 stories high.  When completed, it was the tallest building in the world!
